As part of its ongoing scientific activities, the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at the College of Pharmacy – Al-Nahrain University announced the publication of a peer-reviewed research paper by its faculty members: Lecturer Dr. Muhannad Abdul Sahib Zabon, Lecturer Dr. Saba Hamid Majeed, and Assistant Lecturer Mohammed Murtadha, in a reputable journal indexed in Scopus.
📌 Research Title:
“Comparative Effect of Lidocaine Spray, Cold Packs, and Flashlight Distraction on Arteriovenous Fistula Cannulation Pain in Hemodialysis Patients”
📌 Arabic Title:
Comparative effect of lidocaine spray, cold packs, and flashlight distraction on pain during arteriovenous fistula cannulation in hemodialysis patients.
🎯 Objective:
The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of three non-pharmacological interventions (lidocaine spray, cold packs, and flashlight distraction) in reducing pain associated with venous needle insertion in hemodialysis patients in Iraq, as this pain represents a continuous clinical challenge in patient care.
📌 Key Aspects of the Study:
● Evaluating the effect of each intervention on pain levels using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS)
● Comparing outcomes among the three methods against the standard condition (no intervention)
● Assessing the effectiveness of low-cost and easily applicable interventions in improving patient comfort
● Performing statistical analysis to determine differences between the applied methods
📊 Key Results:
The study demonstrated a significant reduction in pain intensity with all three methods compared to the conventional approach. Lidocaine spray showed the highest effectiveness in pain reduction, followed by cold packs, and then flashlight distraction.
This research represents a valuable scientific contribution that supports the advancement of clinical practices and improves the quality of healthcare provided to hemodialysis patients by adopting simple and effective pain management strategies.
