A Faculty Member at the College of Pharmacy, Al-Nahrain University, Publishes a Research Paper in a Peer-Reviewed Scientific Journal

Assist. Lecturer Shahad Wajih Yaseen, a faculty member in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the College of Pharmacy, Al-Nahrain University, in collaboration with a research team, has published a scientific research paper entitled:

“Synergistic Effects of Vitamin D and Omega-3 on Glycemic Regulation, Lipid Metabolism, and Oxidative Stress in Type-1 Diabetic Mice.”

The paper was published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Journal of Emergency Medicine, Trauma & Acute Care in its 2026 volume. The study investigated the individual and combined effects of vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids on several biological markers associated with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

🎯 The aim of the study was to evaluate the potential contributions of vitamin D and omega-3, administered individually or in combination, to improving blood glucose regulation, lipid profiles, liver enzyme levels, and antioxidant status, while reducing oxidative stress in an experimental mouse model of type 1 diabetes.

📌 The main aspects of the study included:

  • Experimentally inducing type 1 diabetes and dividing the laboratory animals into treatment and control groups.
  • Measuring blood glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, and high-density and low-density lipoprotein levels.
  • Evaluating the effects of treatment on liver enzymes, antioxidant markers, and lipid peroxidation.
  • Comparing the effectiveness of vitamin D and omega-3 when administered separately and in combination.

The results demonstrated that the combination of vitamin D and omega-3 produced the greatest beneficial effects, reducing blood glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, liver enzyme, and lipid peroxidation levels while enhancing antioxidant status compared with the individual treatments.

The study emphasized the importance of further research and clinical trials to verify the efficacy and safety of vitamin D and omega-3 as adjunctive therapies for reducing complications associated with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
