Professor Dr. Haider Bahaa Sahib, Dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Nahrain, attended the inauguration ceremony of the heritage schools in the holy city of Kadhimiya. The event was held in the presence of the Minister of Education, Dr. Ahmed Al-Asadi, the representative of the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr. Ali Al-Saadi, as well as a number of senior governmental, educational, and security officials.
The inauguration was part of the development plan for the holy city of Kadhimiya launched by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani. As part of this initiative, the General Directorate of Education – Baghdad Al-Karkh III reopened four heritage schools after completing rehabilitation and reconstruction works:
- Al-Kadhimiya Preparatory School for Boys
- Al-Kadhimiya Preparatory School for Girls
- Al-Kadhimiya Primary School
- Sheikh Al-Mufid Primary School
The rehabilitation was carried out in an architectural style consistent with the historical identity of Kadhimiya, while incorporating modern technical standards to provide a safe and advanced educational environment that supports the learning process.
In his speech, the Minister of Education affirmed that the Ministry continues to implement development projects aimed at improving school infrastructure, emphasizing that these initiatives reflect the priority of education within the government’s program. He noted that building individuals begins with a comprehensive school environment that preserves the dignity of both students and teachers.
The ceremony featured two short documentary films: the first highlighted the stages of completion and the architectural and technical efforts involved, while the second presented the story of the “Martyrs of the Blackboard” at Al-Kadhimiya Preparatory School for Boys during the former regime, commemorating the sacrifices of the educational community and honoring their national role. The event also included a student performance by pupils from “Jawharat Al-Ilm” School, who expressed their pride in this achievement and emphasized the importance of education in shaping their future.
Al-Kadhimiya Preparatory School for Boys is regarded as one of Baghdad’s long-standing educational institutions, established in the 1930s, and has contributed to graduating generations of professionals who have served Iraq in various fields, including administration, education, medicine, law, and public service.
In his remarks, Professor Dr. Haider Bahaa Sahib stated that reviving heritage schools conveys a civilizational message reflecting respect for Iraq’s educational legacy. He emphasized that genuine investment begins with building individuals intellectually and ethically, adding that developing the educational environment is fundamental to preparing generations capable of creativity, innovation, and service to the nation. He further affirmed that academic institutions, particularly the University of Nahrain, consider supporting the educational sector a core component of their societal responsibility.
